Connecting With Nature, and Each Other, Through Photography

As a couple, nature and photography have been the foundation of our connection. We're excited to share this journey with you. Our workshops offer a space for you to unleash your creativity, discover joy in the quiet moments outdoors, and capture the world through your unique perspective. Whether you're new to photography or aiming to enhance your skills, we're dedicated to supporting your personal growth and exploration. With us, it's more than a photography workshop—it's a journey, inspiring you to connect with the beauty of the natural world in your own, individual way. Let's explore how photography can deepen your connection with nature and the community around you.

Our Ethical Compass

Living in the heart of Ontario's Muskoka region, we've found our calling as Canadian nature photographers and educators. For us, photography is an incredible tool, and it does so much more than capture moments—it inspires change. We're all about showing off the stunning beauty of the natural world, not just to ‘wow’ people, but to bring us all together in a community hug for conservation. We believe in the power of a picture to move hearts and minds, and we're on a mission to use our lenses to spark a love for protecting this beautiful planet we call home.
Join us, and let's make a difference, one photo at a time.

Ego-Free, Inclusive Education

In line with our values, we strive to foster an educational community that is as diverse and vibrant as the ecosystems we photograph. We welcome individuals of all backgrounds and skill levels, extending a special invitation to 2SLGBTQI+ and neurodivergent individuals, including those with ADHD and autism. Our goal is to ensure everyone who joins us feels valued, supported, and empowered to explore their passion for photography and nature, free from judgment and full of encouragement.

Ethical Wildlife Photography

Central to our mission is the ethical consideration of our subjects: the wildlife and their habitats. We advocate for and practice photography that respects and conserves nature, aiming to leave no trace except for footprints. Our approach is guided by principles that prioritize the well-being and preservation of wildlife, educating our community on how to capture nature's beauty responsibly. Learn more about our ethics here.

Sustainable Adventures

Our commitment extends beyond the camera. We engage in global initiatives designed to uplift and empower local communities, ensuring that our presence contributes positively to the areas we visit. By partnering with eco-conscious and sustainable operators, we are dedicated to minimizing our environmental impact, supporting conservation efforts, and promoting the beauty of sustainable living through our work.

Muskoka Is Our Home.
Algonquin Is Our Playground.

On the 125th anniversary of Algonquin Park, we met for our first date. A three-hour drive from Southern Ontario to Lake of Two Rivers was all it took to uncover our shared passions for the outdoors, travel, and photography. Jesse's impromptu act of safeguarding a turtle's journey across the road during our travels underscored our shared values and mutual concern for the well-being of others—no matter how small. This solidified our bond and led us down the path of forming ‘Follow Me North’ as we know it today.

“Those who save turtles together, stay together.” - Jesse

Since relocating to the Lake of Bays area, mere weeks after our first date in 2018, Algonquin Park has become our full-time playground. Transforming our lives from the hustle and bustle of Cambridge and Whitby to the tranquillity of rural existence. In our quest for creativity, we’ve braved 100km/h winds, torrential downpours, unforgiving insects, frigid temperatures and unfortunate farmer tans. All of which have tested us, motivated us, and reaffirmed our dedication to art, conservation, and staying true to our playful hearts.

Algonquin Park, the setting of our first date, proposal, and elopement, remains a fundamental part of our narrative, symbolizing both our beginning and the adventures that lie ahead.

Jesse Villemaire

My story's as vibrant as my personality! For nearly two decades, I was deep in the world of body art, working as a professional body piercer and owning a high-end, reputable tattoo studio in Cambridge, Ontario. That chapter of my life was an adventure, taking me all over Canada and the U.S. to share my passion of public speaking and sharing my knowledge about health and safety in the Body Art community. Along the way, I reconnected with an old hobby that quickly became my passion—photography. Picking up a camera, I saw the world through a fresh perspective, finding a powerful outlet for self-expression and a creative companion as I navigated life with ADHD.

Nowadays, you're likely to find me rolling around in the dirt to capture the perfect shot of playful puppies, or sharing my journey and insights through public speaking. I'm often out before dawn, camera in hand, hoping to catch moose in the fresh glow of a new day’s sunrise.

Photography has become more than a hobby. It's a tool for teaching and creating spaces where everyone feels welcome to explore their creativity. I love nothing more than connecting with creative minds through photography. I'm all about uncovering the magic this world holds, together. Let's inspire and be inspired.

Susan Villemaire

My career began in a newsroom circa 2009, writing about art, climate change, mental health, music, and politics across the Greater Toronto Area. These days, I'm deeply passionate about visual storytelling for the tourism industry.

My 13 years as a Creative Producer have seen me leading teams across EMEA, LATAM, APAC, and North America for esteemed platforms including, 500px, Stocksy United, Flashstock, Shutterstock Studios and Canva, serving as a bridge between clients, production teams and agency partners. Together, we collaborate to craft trendsetting still and video content. During my tenure, I’ve had the pleasure of developing concepts for premier streaming services including Netflix, Disney+, CNN, TLC, History, A&E and the Discovery Channel, leveraging original intellectual properties and tapping into archival resources.

In Follow Me North, I leverage my background in production logistics to design and lead immersive wildlife photography workshops, from the untamed landscapes of South Africa to the serene wilderness of Algonquin Provincial Park. My expertise allows me to curate unforgettable trips that submerge you in local cultures and nature, inspiring photographers to capture and deeply connect with the world around them.

Echoes of Kind Experiences

“WOW! Is the word of choice, to sum up my experience with Follow Me North. I brought a friend for a photography workshop on her birthday. Jesse encouraged my photography-newbie-friend and spent one-on-one time with her in the field. I learned a lot, as well! Jesse sure knows ‘his park’ and the wildlife that inhabits it. He delivered on my request for a moose (we saw three)! I wasn't sure what on Earth we'd do for 12 hours, but it flew by. Jesse drove us to locations known for specific landscapes, birds, and other hopeful finds. Sunrise in the mist. Stunning sunset. Who could ever ask for more? Jesse was engaging and fun to spend the day with. His life experiences are wonderful to listen to, and inspire us to keep on trekking! 100% recommend it for anyone who loves nature, the outdoors, wildlife ethics, and of course—photography!”
— Kelly M, Algonquin Park Photography Workshop

“I did a weekend ‘Lightroom and Light Snacks’ Workshop with Jesse and Susan, and I would highly recommend this to anyone looking to learn Lightroom photo editing to brush up on their skills and even take them to the next level! From the moment I walked into their home, Jesse and Susan made me feel like family. I wish I had met them two years ago. I would have saved myself countless hours of frustration with different editing software. It was a fantastic learning experience in every way! They are very kind and went above and beyond to answer every question. I also appreciated the follow-up videos from the weekend. We were able to focus on learning, knowing everything would be sent to us later.”
— Shelley S, Lightroom Editing Workshop

“Susan is one of the most committed, passionate and capable Producers I have ever had the pleasure of working with. From the day she joined our team, Susan was always the first person to put her hand up for the most challenging assignments, complex strategic projects, pilot programs, and cross-functional think tanks that drove innovation at Flashstock and Shutterstock alike. Susan always comes from a place of putting the customer experience first, and as such, she was instrumental in significantly expanding business with enterprise clients who had been referred specifically as a result of her work with other divisions, and who asked for her by name to be their dedicated Producer and brand champion. In addition to her exemplary work as a photo and video Producer, Susan is also an extraordinarily talented photographer, creative, casting director, location manager and all-around problem solver. She not only has vision, but she also sees things through down to the finest logistical detail. This truly makes her a unicorn in the creative landscape. To top it off, Susan is an eternal optimist and a pure joy to collaborate with. I simply cannot recommend her enough and look forward to our next opportunity to work together.”
— Allie Hobbs, Senior Director of Creative Services @ Mediabrands Content Studio

"I just spent an amazing day in Algonquin Park with Jesse, coaching me on how to take my photography from “spray and pray” to something more methodical, deliberate and successful! I’ve been admiring Jesse and Susan’s beautiful photography, shared on social media and on their website, and am often speechless at their ability to capture the essence of a moment. Jesse, not only are you a fantastic photographer, you’re a natural teacher! You helped build my confidence with my camera, and taught me how to create an image through composition. But possibly the best part was hearing you speak about the residents of the Park, from red squirrels to foxes, bears and moose. Thanks for an amazing day! Looking forward to next time!”
— Beatrix G, Algonquin Park Photography Workshop

“I had an amazing time! I booked a full-day photography workshop as a way to celebrate my wife and I’s 6th anniversary. We both had tons of fun! Jesse showed us so many great spots around Algonquin Park, and we learned a ton about photography. Jesse connects to you on a personal level, making the whole experience enjoyable and entertaining. We recommend Follow Me North for any photography services. We’ll be back in the future!”
— Mark Z, Algonquin Park Photography Workshop

Her deep knowledge of photography and empathetic nature always put both our clients, and internal coworkers at ease; we knew that if Susan was assigned to a project, it would be completed on-time, on-budget, and exceed client satisfaction! If there is ever an opportunity to work with Susan in the future, I definitely would!"

“Susan is a very good producer. I have worked with her on many photoshoot projects for Nestle and the Conagra Group, and it has always been a pleasure to work alongside her. She is very professional and makes herself available when needed during production prep. She is good at organizing and preparing projects that effectively meet the wishes of the clients we work for.
